Broad Assessment Balance Sheet – March 16 UPDATE

The BABS spreadsheets have now been updated for American League-only and National League-only leagues, with data as of March 15. The mixed league spreadsheet will be updated on March 29.

The updated files (both Excel and html online) include the new indicators for on base average. The ADPs remain those from the NFBC mixed leagues. The market values for Rotisserie pricing are the purchase prices from the recent LABR experts leagues. All BABS pricing ranges and player ranges have been updated for the single-league format.

    Ron,
I cannot open your EXCEL file in the xlsx. format. Could you send them out in just xls. format.

An observation of the NL-Only pool….. there are no bargain pitchers but for one in the $30+ and $20+ categories. So, it looks like you’re paying market value for your anchor or anchors and then trying to find bargains later.

Draft coming up in Mixed League. So would you say that by merging the two spreadsheets together I would have an accurate picture of a mixed league SS?

  4. shandler on March 17, 2016 at 4:03 pm

Which spreadsheet do you need? Email me from the contact page with your email address and I’ll send it to you.

  5. shandler on March 17, 2016 at 4:04 pm

That is correct. That is how the market shakes out for those leagues.

  6. shandler on March 17, 2016 at 4:04 pm

Yes, you would have a reasonable facsimile. The tiers might be off by a player or two but not enough to make a difference.

My apologies Ron as I’m sure it was covered previously, I’m not sure what you mean by “the new indicators for on base average” with the NL/AL updates. I notice there are new A+, a+, etc, but I’m not sure how I’m supposed to read them. My only leagues do not use on base, so I’m not sure how if at all this would affect the values in my league with this update?

  8. Thomas Dersham on March 17, 2016 at 9:06 pm

ok my fault, seeing it explained now in alternative rules.

Another Q, curious why in your earlier mixed BABS you had JT Realmuto as a $15 player, and now I don’t see him listed as such on the NL sheet. I’m sure there are others moving up and down, but he’s a keeper of mine at $10 so it stood out to me.

Also, I’m sure you’ve mentioned this, but my brain has limited capacity filling all of this in…Does the off and on pink have any relevance in the ADP column? Thanks!

  10. shandler on March 17, 2016 at 11:46 pm

The mixed league prices were just driven off the ADPs. The AL/NL-only prices are the actual prices paid at the LABR experts league drafts. The ADP bars are in groups of ~50 players; you should draft within each group before moving on to the next.

Ok to clarify, I was referring to the shading you do by tier, not the actual LABR prices…I thought your dark green, medium green, and light green were color coded for the price tier you categorized them in? Dark $35, medium $25, light $15. Realmuto was a light green in the mixed, but no color code in the NL. Was there something that caused you to move him out of the light green tier? Thanks.

In the Feb 26 update, Realmuto’s playing time projection had him in the full-timer tier. As roles started sorting out, he’s slipped into mid-timer status. He’s one of those players right on the cusp, but you can see how the difference of a handful of ABs might affect his BABS ranking. There has to be a dividing line for every rating; sometimes players are right at that line.

  13. Thomas Dersham on March 18, 2016 at 9:11 am

Thanks Ron, I hadn’t heard his PT may slip, so that definitely would affect his value. Appreciate your time.

Will you be updating the spreadsheets by position?

  15. shandler on March 18, 2016 at 12:49 pm

    No plans to do that.

  16. Peter Dennen on March 18, 2016 at 5:58 pm

    Ron,

Looking at the AL Babs worksheet, I need some clarification. The top tier starts with Trout, ends with Teixeira. Next tier starts with Abreu, ends with VMart. Are you suggesting that any players in the same tier are more or less of the same value due to projection variability? Or do you have to break down each tier further by the amount of “net income” (assets-liabilities)?

  17. shandler on March 18, 2016 at 11:48 pm

Any players within an Asset group (like PW,AV) are interchangeable. The tiers are set up to approximate how the games are played — the green bars approximate dollar ranges in auction leagues, the orange bars approximate 3-4 rounds of drafting.

For the person wanting the spreadsheets updated by position, you can highlight the line just above Mike Trout, click on the “Data” tab, then click on “Filters.” You can then click on the filter for position and uncheck the other boxes so that you only see shortstops (or whichever position you’re trying to focus on). I’m not sure if this is exactly what he was asking to do, but if he’s saying he only wants to see one position at a time in Excel, he can do that already by doing using filters.

    Hello Ron,

Great stuff, as always. Will there be an update of the NL/AL only spreadsheets before the end of the month as well? If not, is the reverse true (a reasonable facsimilie with tiers off by a player or two) of splitting the mixed league spreadsheet into NL/AL-only?

  20. shandler on March 20, 2016 at 6:17 pm

Yes, that will work. I only plan to update the overall spreadsheet a week from Tuesday.

  21. Peter Dennen on March 21, 2016 at 10:11 pm

On the Babs worksheet, what does the red “X” and the “+” signify? Since you’re not sorting by position, how do you keep track of the players during the draft?

  22. shandler on March 21, 2016 at 10:29 pm

    It’s all described in chapter 8: https://babsbaseball.com/rsob-chapter-8-the-babs-draft/

  23. Peter Dennen on March 21, 2016 at 10:36 pm

    Ron,

I just found the answer to my question above. I’m still a bit unclear on the order you’re putting on the players within a tier. Since they’re not alphabetical, does that mean your ranking them in the order you prefer them?

  24. shandler on March 22, 2016 at 8:45 am

They are ranked by their market value within each group.

  25. John Bell on March 22, 2016 at 12:14 pm

    Hey Ron,

I have a mixed league draft this weekend, should I combine your NL/AL leagues spreadsheets or try to take the changes seen in the NL/AL and put them into the other spreadsheet, just trying to figure out if I can leverage the updated info without going off the rails.

    Thanks.

  26. shandler on March 22, 2016 at 2:17 pm

Combining the two spreadsheets would be your best option. But do it carefully.

  27. Mike Craig on March 24, 2016 at 5:03 pm

Due to Ethier’s injury, does it change his value (NL only) and add to his injury risk? Easy to assume value drop by at least 50%, but not sure if it should now flag a Liability

  28. shandler on March 24, 2016 at 5:17 pm

Ethier would definitely be dropped to mid-timer status with INJ health risk. I might even drop him to part-time.

  29. Thomas Dersham on March 29, 2016 at 8:26 am

Ron, with Boxberger injury, I noticed not much movement in the mixed update, would you move Colome, Farquar, or Boxberger much in AL only? Thanks.

  30. shandler on March 29, 2016 at 8:42 am

Colome and Farquhar would get a share of the saves, but that situation is still so fluid it’s tough to justify investing there. In cases like this, I opt to just stay away rather than guess.

  31. Thomas Dersham on March 29, 2016 at 8:51 am

Fair enough, my draft is April 10, so if it seems to move one way a week in I’ll take notice. Thanks.

  32. Thomas Dersham on March 29, 2016 at 9:13 am

Follow up Q, I’m in both Al/NL only 12 team leagues and keepers. Many teams seem like TB without established closer, so good ones are either kept or will be overbid, is punting saves in a 4×4 league a viable strategy if I add a couple cheap speculative saves guys hoping they move into the role?

  33. shandler on March 29, 2016 at 9:17 am

That’s a very high risk strategy in a 4×4 league. Unfortunately, you may have to make some educated speculations. It’s a difficult spring for bullpens.

  34. Thomas Dersham on March 29, 2016 at 9:49 am

Kind of what I was leaning but thought I’d get your thoughts. Thanks Ron, appreciate your time.
