Asset groups are a key component of the BABS system. They are our means to assemble players with comparable skills profiles and then review how the marketplace ranks them. The philosophy is that, if several players are comparable, they should be valued at about the same level. As described in Chapter 2 of The BABS Project 3.1, that’s not always the case. Here is where we can uncover opportunities to build profit into our rosters.

The massive (p,a) asset group has 31 full-time and six mid-time hitters. League GMs would be wise to have multiple targets in this group—especially if they’ve already collected some speed assets earlier.

There are 18 outfielders in this group, which makes it a prime pool for a surprisingly scarce position. However, the options with lower risk costs are mostly at the infield corners and shortstop, so be careful. OFs with multi-position eligibility are 3B/OF Kris Bryant (ADP 91, $1 Risk Cost), 1B/OF Ryan Mountcastle (108,$1), 1B/OF Alex Kirilloff (174, $5) and 2B/OF Enrique Hernandez (219,$1). Though not OF-eligible, the full-time multi-position king here is 2B/3B/SS Luis Urias (159,$2).

Urias fits another strategic use of this group’s value plays. With all we’re hearing about the dearth of 3Bmen, he’s one of four nestled between ADPs 146 and 225—none with a Risk Cost above $2.00: Yoan Moncada (146, $0), Urias, Eduardo Escobar (190, $0.50) and Jeimer Candelario (225, $0). If opponents have already filled the position and aren’t competing for them, taking any two in rounds 9-15 would be a coup. Otherwise, don’t be afraid to reach a round or two for one of them.

Bryant joins Alex Bregman (91, $3), Jonathan India (94, $1), Carlos Correa (98, $0), Cody Bellinger (99, $3), Josh Bell (133, $0), Moncada and Connor Joe (346, $3) as hitters with an OBP bump. Perhaps the best bargain in the group is pictured SS Dansby Swanson (125, $0). Let others pay a premium for the three shortstops with same skill set going well before him.

A wild card on this list is mid-timer Eddie Rosario (ADP 162,$3 Risk Cost). He should be one of the earlier free agents signed whenever the lockout ends, and with the universal DH, he’s likely to become full-time. Again, if drafting prior to the lockout ending, he’s worth reaching for before his value increases.

This group also boasts one stealth player to seek: OF Seiya Suzuki. Sneak him in before the lockout ends if your league rules allow—after which he’s almost a shoo-in to be signed. Suzuki’s 2021 featured 38 HR and Japan’s Central League Batting Championship. His career OBP is .414.
