2020 Asset Group Analysis — (p,a)

Asset groups are how BABS assembles players with comparable skills and then reviews how the marketplace ranks them. The philosophy is that, if several players are comparable, they should be valued at about the same level. As described in Chapter 2 of The BABS Project 3.0, that’s is not always the case, It is here where we can uncover numerous opportunities to build profit into our rosters.

By a wide margin, the deepest group of multi-asset hitters in 2020 is (p,a). This probably shouldn’t come as any great surprise. These moderate impact performers would lie near the mean of a bell curve in two different categories.

Weighing in at 29 position players strong, these hitters are available as early as pick 29, all the way through the end game in the deepest of deep leagues.  There are eight part-timers, five mid-timers and 21 slated for full-time plate appearances.

For the most part, the drafting public is waiting a bit on players of this ilk, with a couple of notable exceptions.  Some combination of name recognition and potential/past performance seem to elevate the likes of Gleyber Torres (ADP 29), Kris Bryant (56) and Manny Machado (60). BABS essentially disregards the narrative cases for each, and coldly projects similar outcomes reasonably within the error bar for Trey Mancini (ADP 104), Mike Moustakas (111) and Eduardo Escobar (116). Drilling down simply to assets and liabilities may elicit consternation for some, but attempts to access the truth have a tendency to be un-congenial. BABS is not here to make friends.

Some good news: the BABSian comps listed above are not only similarly-skilled, all six players are multi-position eligible in most setups. There happen to be a total of eight (seven full-time, one mid-time) bats in this group who can provide positional flexibility.

The long view is that while Gleyber and KB are great players, maybe their upside isn’t quite what it appears to be. Or maybe it is, but at the same time BABS envisions a practicable scenario where Lourdes Gurriel or a healthy Andrew McCutchen provide similar final lines. There are numerous options here with the ability to fill out a fantasy roster with helpful stats.

Be aware of a few land mines and opportunities here. Carlos Correa and J.D. Davis clock in with only mid-time plate appearances but are ranked ahead of more stable full-timers. Asdrubal Cabrera and Ryan Zimmerman highlight the part-timers who have potential playing time upside. The deeper the asset group, the more opportunities for profit.
