2020 Asset Group Analysis – (p,AV)
Asset groups are how BABS assembles players with comparable skills and then reviews how the marketplace ranks them. The philosophy is that, if several players are comparable, they should be valued at about the same level. As described in Chapter 2 of The BABS Project 3.0, that’s is not always the case, It is here where we can uncover numerous opportunities to build profit into our rosters.

The (p,AV) group is an attention-grabbing collection of hitters with a very diverse market outlook… from a first round selection to some being taken after round 20. It is also a group with few significant liabilities.
The top six hitters as viewed by the market includes a pair of Astros in Alex Bregman and George Springer, Red Sox 3rd baseman Rafael Devers coming off a career season as well as steady and reliable teammate Xander Bogaerts, White Sox rookie Eloy Jimenez who had a strong debut a year ago, and a newcomer to this group, Charlie Blackmon, who has historically resided in much higher rated asset classes. In a nutshell, all six from BABS’ perspective are priced too high for the total skill sets that they bring.
A pair of first basemen are listed next and may hit that “sweet spot” where the market and BABS are in general agreement. Both Jose Abreu and Josh Bell are at a price in the 6-7 round range that if owners missed out on the first basemen in the topmost BABS asset groups, then one from this pair could be your next best alternative.
The remaining four full-time players possess comparable skills to the aforementioned players, but in BABS’s eyes are being discounted too heavily by the marketplace. Looking for a shortstop? The Dodgers’ Corey Seager after Round 10 could be a profit opportunity. After another 100 picks, you will find Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun and his playing time uncertainty. BABS would bet on the skill set of Braun, despite the internal competition from Justin Smoak and others. The market has pushed Joey Votto to round 19 after two straight down seasons. Votto no longer carries extreme skills, but BABS says he still owns enough proficiencies to contribute constructively to your roster, especially at this price. Miami newcomer Corey Dickerson would seem to have both the contract and the full-time position to allow for significant playing time in the Marlins outfield. An injury-ruined season a year ago brings a caution of risk but Dickerson’s history has been one where he has produced when healthy. BABS says Dickerson is a great value at round 20 and beyond.
As an end game speculation, Michael Tauchman showed last year that he could produce when called upon by the Yankees. 2020 begins with the looks of another talented, yet crowded outfield situation in the Bronx. But a reserve round pick could yield profit once again.
