2020 Secondbasemen
by Pat Cloghessy
There are a total of 30 full- and mid-timers at the 2nd base position (21 F, 9 M). Taken together, here is a snapshot:
9 Power assets
9 speed assets
19 batting effectiveness assets
9 (-P) liabilities
3 (-A) liabilities
7 injury liabilities
This seems a relatively safe position. At no point in the draft does it fall off the cliff. Here are the BABS ratings for secondbasemen who will potentially provide positive value to your team:

ASSETS: PT (Playing time), Pw (Power), Sp (Speed), Av (Batting Effectiveness), * (OBP help), Pk (Park help), Rg (Regression help). LIABILITIES: Sk (Skills risk), Inj (Injury), Ex (Inexperience), Nw (New team), Pk (Park hurt), Ag (Age decline), Rg (Regression hurt)
There are a couple of fairly distinct ADP groupings among the first 15 second baseman. The first seven get selected prior to pick 80. The next eight commence around pick 132.
Tier one is mostly comprised of speed and batting effectiveness, with a couple of power options mixed in. Keston Hiura (PW,a) and Max Muncy (P+) stand out as the major power players. Hiura (pictured) gets selected about 30 picks ahead of Muncy.
Players like Jose Altuve (s,A+), Ozzie Albies (SB,AV) and Whit Merrifield (SB,AV) check in with multiple assets while Jonathan Villar (SB) and DJ LeMahieu (A+) round out the top 7.
This position presents little disagreement between BABS and the marketplace. Thus far, the only quibble early on is probably Jonathan Villar, who’s helium was supplied by very early drafters, mostly prior to his arrival in Miami. In recent weeks, Villar’s ADP is closer to Hiura’s. Either way, BABS has her doubts about his 2019 power spike.
We wait almost 70 picks before entering “tier 2” of 2nd basemen, ranked by ADP. Between picks 130 and 230, eight more keystoners are plucked from the player pool. This group has one overwhelming similarity: youth. Or, in BABSian: experience liabilities. These aren’t a death knell, rather an increased risk, which is something that comes with youth, as evidenced by the some of the skill liabilities present within this group.
Some high ceilings, some low floors, but plenty of power in this set. Cavan Biggio, Brandon Lowe and Rougned Odor are all equipped with significantly impactful power skills (PW). Gavin Lux (p,a) and Ryan McMahon (p) chip in with moderate power assets.
The end game at second base won’t kill you, and is home to a whole host of boring veterans. Professional hitters like Starlin Castro (AV), Robinson Cano (AV) and to a lesser extent Jurickson Profar (a) can be had around pick 300 or later.
Right in the same range as Starlin Castro, however, are two possible game-changers — probably not on a grand scale, but needle-movers in their own way. One is Dee Gordon (S+,a). We know his strengths and weaknesses, but at this point in the draft the potential for category shifting SB output is tantalizing. Don’t forget about Nick Madrigal (SB,AV). Obvious questions can be lodged against both his path to playing time and lack of experience. But put him next to Albies and Merrifield and see similar skills and salivate at the possibilities of getting that at pick 275.
